Juan Diaz was born in 1925 in Gurabo, Puerto Rico. After studying art with Cristóbal Ruiz in 1946 he joined the Taller de Gráfica y Cínema of the Comisión de Parques y Recreo Público on a government scholarship. There he worked as an aprentice under Irene Delano and later as poster designer. Eventually he became head of animation in the División de Educación de la Comunidad, before moving to the Departamento de Instrucción Pública.
