7 Tons of Material Diverted from the Landfill

Reduce to reuse 5Over Move Out Weekend, the Office of Campus Sustainability, Facilities Operations, the New Paltz Reuse Center, New Paltz Recycles, and local volunteers partnered for the annual Reuse2Reduce program as well as the Great Community Giveaway.  This year, students donated nearly 7 tons of clothing, shoes, household supplies, and nonperishable food.  In 2015, 6 tons of material was donated and in 2014, 2.4 tons was diverted.  Local charities and nonprofits have the opportunity to access the donated materials.  All remaining materials are given away to the community for free at annual Great Community Giveaway at the United Methodist Church on Main Street.

For the first time this year, the team partnered with the Sojourner Truth Library to give students the opportunity to donate used textbooks to the library’s Textbook Collection program.  Students donated 130 books to the Textbook Collection program.  Future students will have the opportunity to check out the donated course textbooks for free.

A big thank you goes out to Laura Petit of the New Paltz Reuse Center, Syed Hasan of New Paltz Recycles, Kim Nelson of Facilities Operations, and Charlene Martoni of the Sojourner Truth Library for making this year’s Reuse2Reduce program a great success!
