A new sustainable food initiative is coming to SUNY New Paltz. Every Friday beginning January 27th through the end of April, Hasbrouck will be serving Red’s Best fish for lunch and dinner. Red’s Best fish is:
- Wild. This fish you’re eating lived a natural life of a fish in the wild. It’s not farmed in pens and fed food that’s not naturally intended for fish.
- Fresh. The fish was caught yesterday.
- Seasonal. Did you know that fish follow seasonal patterns? The Catch of the Day features fish that are plentiful now, including lesser known species, not what’s necessarily in most demand.
- From the region. The fish is from the Northwest Atlantic (aka off the coast of New England, mostly Massachusetts). Wondering why we’re not serving really local fish from the Hudson River? Hudson River fish consumption is not recommended, especially for children under 15 and women under 50 due to high levels of PCBs. Also, the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation shut down commercial fishing in the Hudson River in the mid-2000s.
- Traceable back to the fisherman. The chefs at Hasbrouck have access to information about what fisherfolk the fish came from. If you’re curious about this and the info is not displayed, request this info from dining hall staff!
- From small and medium size family-owned boats. This fish is NOT from industrial, large-scale fishing operations.
- From community-based operations. The fish come from community-based, family-scale operations.
