WHAT IS A STUDENT AMBASSADOR?

A Student Ambassador is the primary student contact between the public and SUNY New Paltz in the area of Undergraduate Admission. A Student Ambassador is charged with serving as a host to visiting prospective students and their families as well as providing guidance and information over the phone and through e-mail.

WHAT ARE THE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES?

  • Host prospective students and their families on weekly walking tours of campus.
  • Host campus visits on select weekends throughout the academic year.
  • Work Open House in the Fall and two Accepted Student Days in the Spring.

WHAT IS A WELCOME CENTER GREETER?

Whether it is a new staff member, current student, general visitor, or a prospective student seeking information, Welcome Center Greeters are there to provide them with information in a patient, friendly, accurate, and helpful manner.  At times, the Welcome Center may be the first point of contact someone has with our campus and as such, it is important that all Greeters make callers and visitors their first priority in order to leave a positive, lasting impression.

WHAT ARE THE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES?

  • Answering phones
  • Greeting walk-in visitors
  • Providing information such as directions, academic and cultural offerings, and event details
  • Managing displays and literature racks
  • Creating a welcoming environment for any and all visitors
  • Serve as back up for general campus tours

WHAT KIND OF PERSON MAKES A GOOD STUDENT AMBASSADOR AND WELCOME CENTER GREETER?

  • Someone who genuinely loves to be part of the SUNY New Paltz community.
  • Someone who enjoys sharing their experiences with others.
  • Someone who is articulate, has good oral and written communication skills, and understands the meaning and importance of professionalism and outstanding customer service.
  • Someone with a flexible daily schedule that would allow them to fully commit to the expectations of the job.

 

WHAT ELSE IS EXPECTED OF A STUDENT AMBASSADOR AND WELCOME CENTER GREETERS?

Each Student Ambassador and Welcome Center Greeter is expected to carry out all tasks assigned to them in an exemplary manner.  They are called upon to assist with the hiring and training of new Ambassadors, T.A.L.O.N.S., and Welcome Center members as well as assist with the organization of large scale events.  In many instances, Ambassadors and Welcome Center Greeters participate in events and tours outside of the Office of Undergraduate Admission. 

 

WHO CAN APPLY?

Anyone interested in becoming a Student Ambassador or Welcome Center Greeter must meet the following criteria:

  • Full-time undergraduate student
  • On campus resident (ambassador only)
  • 2.5 cumulative GPA
  • Clean judicial record
  • Completed one academic year at New Paltz by the start of their employment

Join T.A.L.O.N.S.! As a member of our T.A.L.O.N.S. team, you will assist the Office of Undergraduate Admission by sharing your experiences at New Paltz with high school and community college students and their families who are trying to figure out if New Paltz is the school for them! Additionally, participating in T.A.L.O.N.S. looks great on a Student Ambassador application!
