Music of Hate, Music for Healing
November 18, 2023~ 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm
Online Continuing Education Course
The course will be in two parts.
Part One will focus on headlines that demonstrate the growth of hatred in our current environment. The presenter will present information demonstrating some of the ways that music has been used to spread hate. Definitions of Hate Music and some of its common characteristics will be discussed. Love, compassion, and forgiveness will be presented as alternatives to hate. Historical examples of Hate Music will be presented, followed by more recent examples. Functions of Hate Music will be given, as well as why Hate Music should be considered a dangerous public health concern. Part two will end on a positive note by citing the work of the organization Life After Hate.
Part Two will focus on music therapy as a counterpoint to Hate Music; to help and to heal. Professional documents will be cited from AMTA and CBMT to help guide responses to Hate Music if encountered in MT practice or personal lives. Prominent music therapists will be quoted regarding their experiences with Hate Music or hatred. In Part Two, participants will consider their own biases through music and will discuss possible strategies and approaches for handling Hate Music. Examples of “musical pushback” will be given, as well as an example of a real music therapy project that dealt with reactions to Hate Music

Course Objectives
- Participants will be able to define what is meant by “Hate Music” (CBMT Domains I.B.d.h.i, I.C.4, and I.D.10)
- Participants will be able to describe how AMTA/CBMT documents provide guidance to music therapists relevant to "Hate Music" (i.e. nondiscrimination policy, code of ethics, standards of practice, CBMT domains).
- Participants will be able to share strategies and ideas for how to deal with “Hate Music”, if encountered in music therapy settings. (CBMT Domain IV.A.2)

Music of Hate, Music for Healing is approved by the Certification Board for Music Therapists, Inc. for 3 Continuing Music Therapy Education Credits (CMTEs).
