Reopening FAQ of the day

What is a “hybrid” course?
A hybrid course mixes in-person and online class sessions during the semester. It is a highly flexible format that reduces face-to-face time, using online learning for elements of the course that deliver well in an online space, and using reduced seated time for learning objectives that benefit from real-time discussion, feedback or group activity.
An example of a hybrid course might be a mostly online section that meets in person six times per semester for activities such as group projects, hands-on activities, discussion sessions, presentations or other learning activities that benefit most from the seated environment.
SUNY New Paltz has not established an “official” requirement for how much of a hybrid course needs to be delivered in person. We believe that faculty and instructional designers are best able to determine what is pedagogically appropriate for any given course. Hybrid sections should be designed in a way that does not increase the overall number of hours of student time on task for the course.
The College does require that when hybrid sections meet in person, they use that time for more than just exams. While these sessions may include some exam periods, in-person meetings should also include high-impact teaching and learning experiences.
The College's fall 2020 reopening plan is highly detailed and dense, and our corresponding list of FAQs runs to more than 10,000 words (and counting!). In an effort to make this very important information more digestible for campus community members, we're highlighting questions and answers in this newsletter, one per day, as the fall semester approaches.
Please note: We are working to update and add FAQs as planning continues and this situation evolves. We will prioritize sharing the most current information in this space.

Spring 2020 capstones and theses

It was genuinely difficult to keep up with the staggering volume of galleries, exhibitions, original research and video presentations New Paltz students published at the end of the 2019-20 academic year. With just weeks to go until the fall semester, we're taking advantage of a few more opportunities to give this exceptional scholarship and creative work its due.
Today, artworks that went outside to play, from Other Worlds are Possible, the spring 2020 MFA Thesis Show.

Corina Willette '20g (Painting & Drawing)
“In play, time slips away. Visual allusions occur, your mind broadens allowing new realities. These analog virtual-realty artworks — created initially for interior spaces — ended up 'going out to play.' Once outside, they interwove with the natural environment they were inspired by, discovering multiple ways of being. Childlike wonder is essential to my approach to both materials and images. Sensual encounters, such as the pattern of clouds, the smell of dirt or the sound of birds calling take on meaning from our experiences and belief systems. In this way the patterns and connections we make, fact or fiction, become our reality.”
