Student Capstones and Thesis Work

It was genuinely difficult to keep up with the staggering volume of galleries, exhibitions, original research and video presentations New Paltz students published at the end of the 2019-20 academic year. We'd like to take time this summer to spotlight individual projects and give this exceptional scholarship and creative work its due.

Today, "innovation for the visually impaired," from the 2020 Virtual Engineering Design Expo.

by Liam Caufaglione ’20 (Chemical Engineering), Jessy Li ’20 (Mechanical Engineering), Marista Rehma ’20 (Mechanical Engineering) and Lars Stoeckhert ’20 (Mechanical Engineering)
Advisors: Dr. Damodaran Radhakrishnan
Co-Advisor: Dr. Ping-Chuan Wang
"Our obstacle detection device is a wearable device made to help blind and visually impaired people navigate more easily through their everyday environment. The device is made to be comfortable to wear, lightweight, non-intrusive and cost-effective. To ensure the quality of the product, drop tests and humidity tests simulating real-world environmental wear will also be briefly discussed to address the reliability against mechanical shock and moisture induced electrical failure."

Today we're featuring work from Gap in the Clouds, the capstone exhibition for BA and BS seniors in the visual arts.

by Tara Severance ’20 (Visual Arts)
"I find it difficult to truly organize what can’t be touched. Instead of coming to a resolution, being able to let go, there’s just a mass of disorganized thoughts. This makes any nostalgia that’s unaccompanied by a tangible object a sticky mental trap. Through my work I get to explore ways to physically sort these thoughts out.
Printmaking, papermaking, and digital art lend themselves well to this type of cataloging. Each medium is capable of producing multiples. Take a run of just one lithograph print; at the end there’s a whole assortment of objects including the original plate/stone, proofs, misprints, and final copies. Each product is turned into a memento of sorts. When digital art is added tothe mix, even more “objects” (different save states and sketches) are made.
The conglomerate left by these processes is sometimes overwhelming, but in that lies the point. This is the closest I can get to actually reorganizing the files of my brain ... As much as my work is about my own experiences, it’s also about visualizing and acting out the process we go through when dealing with the “stickiness” of nostalgia and memory."

Protocols and Supervisor Guidance for Employee Return to Campus

Posted on: 3:04 PM on Tue, 23 June

Colleagues,
As we prepare to bring campus community members back, we know that many employees are concerned and feel uncertain about returning to work.  Some are concerned about protocols and practices that will be in place to keep the campus community safe, while others may have concerns about how returning to work impacts work-life dynamics as some employees are caring for elders and children while working remotely.  Below are some initial steps as well as longer term actions supervisors and department leaders can take to prepare work-spaces and support employee needs.
Currently, a telecommuting program is in place for employees in all negotiating units until October 2.  We urge supervisors and employees to work together to continue telecommuting plans and staggered campus schedules to the extent that these plans meet operational needs.  These plans can of course be updated as employee needs and operational needs change.  HRDI is available to help with questions or with altering of telecommuting plans.  Updated plans can be sent to Jodi Papa at papaj@newpaltz.edu   Some units on campus will be deemed essential and will return to campus presence (while maintaining social distancing and using provided personal protective equipment (PPE)) to prepare for operations and instructional needs as students and other employees return to campus this fall.

REQUIRED training for all employees BEFORE returning to campus for work

  • All employees will need to complete a general training video (approximately 12 minutes, requires New Paltz Login) prior to returning to work on campus.
  • Your department may have additional safety protocols that need to be incorporated.  Supervisors are encouraged to contact the Office of Environmental Health & Safety to discuss any additional safety protocols, training or specialized personal protective equipment that may be needed.
  • Assuring that we maintain safe social distancing
The current guidance is that we should maintain at least 6 feet of distance where an office space is occupied by more than one person.
    • Complete a social distancing assessment of your office area(s) and as warranted contact Environmental Health & Safety with questions and for guidance on how to address the needs in your office. Again, we strongly encourage that you continue to employ practices that avoid or reduce the frequency of in-person interaction. Use email, phones, WebEx for meetings and lock boxes or trays outside of offices.
    • Where six feet of distance difficult or impossible to maintain in the office space, can furniture be reconfigured to maintain distance and still preserve functioning?
    • Consider alternatives your office might need to employ consider for replacing in-person transactions. For example, using email, phones, web-ex for meetings and lock boxes or trays outside of offices for deliveries of paperwork.
    • Will you need to eliminate waiting areas for individuals visiting your office and develop alternative procedures for those waiting for appointments?

Communicating Safety

    • Contact the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) for signage to encourage healthy habits and maintain social distancing per the social distancing and face covering guidance from CDC.
    • If six feet of social distancing is not feasible, a face covering (over the nose and mouth) must be worn per current social distancing and face covering guidance and Executive Orders.  Even if social distancing is feasible, face coverings will be required in classrooms and other settings noted below. Face coverings are available for pick up at the mail room.

Working Differently

    • Determine the capacity for employees to work remotely and identify functions requiring in-person campus presence.  Make use of the telecommuting program which is now extended to October 2, 2020.  Contact HRDI for assistance and guidance if you have questions on confirming a plan.
    • What to do if an employee has indicated they need accommodations or are high risk for COVID-19.
      • The Americans with Disability Act (ADA) allows for employees to self-identify need for accommodations if they (or a family member in the home) are in a high-risk category based upon a preexisting medical conditions, immunocompromised status or disability.  Employees who wish to discuss ADA accommodations should be directed to the college’s ADA process https://www.newpaltz.edu/hr/accommodations-ada/
      • Accommodations are dependent on the specific needs of the individual employee.  HRDI will work with the employee directly to guide the ADA process and will work with departments to ensure accommodation requests are met appropriately.
  • Continue to hold meetings via web-ex or phone.  This reduces the need to gather people in spaces and reduces possibility of transmission.
  • Seek guidance from HRDI before inviting any visitors to campus.
  • If your office allows for paperwork and transactions to occur via email or drop box, continue those practices and reduce the number of visitors and in-person transactions .
  • Small spaces, like break rooms, lounges, kitchenettes or copy rooms etc. should be limited to 10 people or less and maintain required social distancing of 6 ft.
  • Discourage employees from sharing other employees’ tools, desks, equipment and encourage them to clean and disinfect tools, desks and equipment between uses.

Daily Routine:

  • Employees will be required to complete a daily health screening for any day they are planning to work on campus. Information on this screening process will be provided soon.
  • Employees who identify as having elevated temperature (above 100 degrees) or any common COVID symptoms (cough, fever or chills, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, muscle or body aches, headache, sore throat, loss of taste/smell, congestion/runny nose, fatigue, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea) would not be permitted to report to campus to work and would be referred to Jane Gallucci in Benefits for support and guidance.
    • Employees who report a temperature or symptoms but who feel able to work remotely until these conditions resolve are to be accommodated and would not be required to use time.  Employees are encouraged to seek medical attention if temperature and symptoms worsen or do not resolve.
    • Employees who report temperature or symptoms and who are not well enough to work remotely. If an employee is quarantined, they receive 14 calendar days of leave. This does not have to be continuous.
    • In the case that an employee does qualify for leave or has run out of leave, an employee can use sick, FEPSLA or unpaid time.
  • Employees may need reminders and directives to wear mask while traveling between offices.
  • Face coverings are required in public spaces, including when using elevators, and where interaction will be less than 6 ft under NY Forward guidance.
  • Encourage employees to maintain office cleanliness.  Desk and office spaces are easier to clean if there is less clutter or collection of personal items. Employees will be responsible for cleaning and disinfecting their own desk, office common spaces, work equipment and partitions.
  • Encourage employees to rigorously practice hand hygiene, cough etiquette, cleanliness, and sanitation.
  • Disinfecting supplies are available upon request from OEM by area supervisors.

Longer term support

  • Talk with employees in your area. Check-in regularly with employees to discuss their challenges, concerns or questions.
  • Make it clear that you understand that needs may change in their lives and you are open to hearing from them and that you are open to supporting changing needs and transition.  HRDI is a partner in supporting our employees and supervisors.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is another resource for support. EAP Coordinators

SUNY New Paltz to give Gerald Benjamin virtual retirement party

Student Capstones and Thesis Work

It was genuinely difficult to keep up with the staggering volume of galleries, exhibitions, original research and video presentations New Paltz students published at the end of the 2019-20 academic year. We'd like to take time this summer to spotlight individual projects and give this exceptional scholarship and creative work its due.

Today, a "smart outdoor chair" that appeared in the 2020 Virtual Engineering Design Expo.

Quentin Owusu-Adjei Thomson '20 (Electrical Engineering), James Luong ’20 (Electrical Engineering), Michael Perez ’20 (Electrical Engineering), Syed Walid ’20 (Electrical Engineering) and Bryce Shannon ’20 (Mechanical Engineering)
Advisor: Gerald Selvaggi

"This chair will initiate a signal when it is exposed to a water source such as rain droplets. It is designed to automatically protect the interior cushion from any water damage. This will be done by having the back of the chair close onto the seat cushions of the chair, so the only part exposed is the protective material (Figure 1)."

Little Jelly Bean sets out to discover a world of different genders and pronouns but faces difficulty along the way. Through interactive storytelling and original illustrations, this project educates and introduces children to the idea of transgender identity with an authentic and touching experience that will help them understand then support trans people without prejudice. Another aim is to act as a support and an initial knowledge to trans children that encourages them to be who they really are."

"I titled this body of my work Meditation. The works, include two series, containing both printmaking and installation. I have been working on both series for about 30 years. I examine both history and the present in a very personal way and I integrate both philosophy and religion into my work. Through my artistic practice, I bridge the language gap between the Eastern and Western cultures. I pay attention to the relationships between humans and nature, and how they are shaped by modern civilization. Meditation is both the content and the state of my life, and my primary means of instigating this research."

"With the use of sustainable biomaterials such as hemp, synthetic material in composites may be replaced in targeted applications. However, this switch is complicated by the material property variation of natural fiber replacements. In order to gain an understanding of how different material properties are impacted by different agricultural processes and harvesting techniques, hemp samples grown in the years 2018 and 2019 with different levels of manure or inorganic nitrogen were tested. Single, defect-free fiber strands were placed on clear mounting tabs and then measured to determine the average cross sectional area of the fiber."

Bruce Wahl '20g (Photography & Related Media)

"My father lives in a town I can not get lost in. He still inhabits my childhood home, surrounded by a collection of objects and photographs arrayed as shrines to his American Dream. Both the town and the man seem alien to me now. This village could be anywhere in New England, it is generic in its quirkiness. Chock full of its own altars to cultural ideas and heavy with an American artifice of place. Photographs, much like memories, degrade over time but still reach for a truth. This is not a perfect objective truth, but a personal one both conflicted and contradictory, this is America after all."

"Election dates, voter registration deadlines, polling places and other election information can be overwhelming to even the most politically informed citizens in the United States ... By creating a visual language along with clear and consistent guidelines for usage across a variety of mediums, this project improves accessibility and legibility of voter information and aims to give citizens access to the information they need to participate in democratic elections."

"Autonomous lawn mowers are an emerging technology that show large potential for future implementation in the lawn care industry. Most current models require an electrified guidewire to be installed to constrain the mower’s movements on the user’s lawn. This project removes the required guidewire using a GPS mapping system and an algorithm to plot the lawn mower’s path as it navigates the lawn ... The developed algorithm using Python language for the Raspberry Pi stores information as the lawn mower traverses the area ... This information is used to mow the lawn in straight lines with the most efficient mowing route, reducing cost and labor."

Analysis of trace lead and arsenic concentrations in urban vegetable gardens
Morgan Slater '20 (Environmental Geochemical Science)
Advisors: Salvatore Engel-DiMauro, associate professor, geography
Megan Ferguson, associate professor and chair, chemistry

"Some residents of the East New York neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, who cultivate land for vegetables expressed concerns about trace element contamination in their gardens. Vegetables grown in soil that is contaminated with trace elements such as lead (Pb) and arsenic (As) can absorb these elements, which are harmful when ingested due to their toxicity ... Once an area experiences Pb or As contamination, it is difficult to remediate. The purpose of this study was to determine the concentration of As and Pb in the gardens of the East New York residents."

US Intervention in Latin America

Karen Jaimes '20g (Studio Art - Ceramics)

"Exalting the overlooked and exposing truth is a sublime act. By resurrecting ancient Precolumbian ceramic forms, I invoke the rich visual language of my ancestors to address the systemic impact of colonization on indigenous people and the natural world. I combine various techniques using globally sourced ceramic materials and stained glass to create evocative sculptures. Through the hybridization of Precolumbian forms with iconic contemporary imagery, I revive indigenous knowledge and provide new narratives from the diverse Latinx diaspora in the US. The hybrids assert their autonomy, challenge pervasive Western ideologies, and ask viewers to consider the past, present, and future."

Today we're looking at a study of play fulfillment in adults by students and faculty in the Department of Psychology, presented as part of the 2020 Student Research Symposium.
Use these links to view the virtual symposium presentations and the 2020 abstract book.

College Students' Experience with Play
Ann Marie DeBonis '21g (Psychological Science), Ash Moquin '20 (Psychology), Theresa Paras '20 (Psychology), Kanjira Rodriguez '20 (Psychology)

"Prior to this study, this lab had created a four-item scale known as the Adult Play Fulfillment Index (APFI), for the purpose of measuring play fulfillment in adults ... The purpose of this current study was to continue psychometric evaluation of the APFI, which measures the extent to which the respondent feels that their need to engage in preferred play activities during the past two weeks has been met ... Specifically, it was hypothesized that those low in play fulfillment will engage in play longer and experience greater benefits in positive emotion compared to those who score high in play fulfillment."

"While the pixel art style began as a digital format with limitations, due to the hardware at the time, it has had a resurgence in popularity due to its nostalgic appeal ... Creating content one pixel at a time gives a sense of satisfaction that only arrives from creating pieces one at a time to create a magnificent work of art in the end."
