Student Capstones and Thesis Work

It was genuinely difficult to keep up with the staggering volume of galleries, exhibitions, original research and video presentations New Paltz students published at the end of the 2019-20 academic year. We'd like to take time this summer to spotlight individual projects and give this exceptional scholarship and creative work its due.

Today, a "smart outdoor chair" that appeared in the 2020 Virtual Engineering Design Expo.

Quentin Owusu-Adjei Thomson '20 (Electrical Engineering), James Luong ’20 (Electrical Engineering), Michael Perez ’20 (Electrical Engineering), Syed Walid ’20 (Electrical Engineering) and Bryce Shannon ’20 (Mechanical Engineering)
Advisor: Gerald Selvaggi

"This chair will initiate a signal when it is exposed to a water source such as rain droplets. It is designed to automatically protect the interior cushion from any water damage. This will be done by having the back of the chair close onto the seat cushions of the chair, so the only part exposed is the protective material (Figure 1)."
