Arts Meets Industry
The new graduate program in Digital Design & Fabrication lives at the intersection of art, engineering, design, manufacturing and computer science. It’s an interdisciplinary curriculum founded on the beliefs that technology and design are complementary; that studio practice can be enhanced by digital processes; and that industrial production can be beautiful.
3D Printing and So Much More
3D printing is our origin story, and it remains at the heart of our curriculum. But today, polymer 3D printing is just one of many tools we use – including Computer Aided Design software, laser cutters, scanners and metal printers – that have changed not only how objects are designed, but what we can design and manufacture.
A Top Academic Lab with Hundreds of Clients
SUNY New Paltz became one of the first universities in the nation to establish a 3D printing lab in 2013. Our resources, expertise and network have only grown since then. The Hudson Valley Additive Manufacturing Center, housed in our new Engineering Innovation Hub, boasts some of the most advanced technology to be found at any academic lab in the U.S., and provides design, prototyping and fabrication services to more than 400 professional partners.
What Will You Build?
Our blending of design and technical knowhow is more than just an aesthetic philosophy – it’s also a pathway for our students to attain success as they define it. Mastering these skills puts our graduates in position to design for applications in fashion, medicine, heavy industry, fine arts – truly, any discipline that involves the creation of objects. It also sets them up to be great communicators within a team of experts, equally fluent in the principles of good design and in the science of digital fabrication.
