Enabling Engagement with Inclusive Design

This workshop is aimed to help participants understand how people with sensory, physical and cognitive impairments might experience design work and how we can optimize for their needs. The outcome of focusing on these individuals as a use case is better design that benefits everyone, whether or not they experience a disability. We will learn how to meet the constraints of assistive technologies that these people might use. We will explore digital accessibility in the design of apps and websites, as well as document formats including PDFs and Google Drive/ Word documents. In addition to the more technical aspects of accessibility, we will learn about how following human-centered design standards can result in outcomes more likely to meet the needs of your audience.
Shauna Keating is a designer working in Kingston NY at Moonfarmer, a creative digital studio specializing in making handmade websites, applications, and art. She graduated from SUNY New Paltz in 2016, where her senior thesis project was an app concept called Mobility Map that focused on accessible environments and user interfaces. The result of this project was a lot of exposure giving talks about her research both locally and as far as the New York Accessibility Meetup. Shauna also is actively involved in building a stronger design community in the Hudson Valley through organizing events with the Hudson Valley Tech Meetup, Catskills Conf, and AIGA Upstate New York.

Please join us for two workshop sessions: The first session will focus on 3D modeling and concept generation, product design and development along with tools for collaboration. The second will introduce Fusion 360's built in CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) workflow and how it may integrate into SUNY New Paltz's advanced manufacturing capacities.

The Carved Roman Letter

Local stone carver, Nils Kulleseid, www.kulleseidstonecarving.org, will introduce participants to tools and techniques involved in carving classical letterforms in stone. This is a hands on workshop. Participants are invited to carve one or more letters in bluestone. Stone will be provided and tools will be available for use during the workshop.

Adobe Illustrator and Visual Literacy Fundamentals

Learn fundamentals of visual form and color composition in Adobe Illustrator. In this workshop, we'll learn how to draw with vector tools. Then, we'll work with a visual alphabet of shapes to draw symbols, icons, and increasingly elaborate representations of our world. We'll also learn how to create harmonious color themes and apply them to these compositions. No previous art or design experience is necessary.

Wearable Physical Computing

In this workshop participants will be guided through building a sound reactive wearable using the Adafruit GEMMA microcontroller board. Topics covered will be reading and building from a circuit diagram along with the basics of soldering and programming for LED animation and sound detection. Open to all skill levels, basic computer understanding and a familiarity with hand tools required.

Learn to make paste papers—one of the oldest and simplest decorated paper traditions developed by bookbinders as an inexpensive way to create covers and endsheets. Using pigmented paste students will create rich 3-dimensional patterns and designs on paper to be used in bookbinding, greeting cards, wrapping paper, collages.

If you have put words on a page and posted it in public, you have designed and delivered a message. In this workshop we will explore further how to effectively design a poster promoting your event. We will start with an introduction to the basic principles of typography and layout and their use in achieving a compelling design. Then, we’ll apply these strategies as we design a poster in Adobe Illustrator. Bring your own content if you would like to design for a specific project or event, or be inspired by something new in the moment. If you have been looking for an opportunity to try your hand at graphic design, this workshop is for you.
