“Enhancing Understanding of Soil Regeneration through Experiential Learning for Sustainable Agriculture Practices for Undergraduate Students / Farmers”
Supervised by Dr. Shafiul Chowdhury, Associate Professor and Director of Environmental Science Program, this project aims to enhance the understanding of sustainable agriculture by employing experiential learning to explore soil regeneration processes, fostering a deeper understanding of soil health management among undergraduate students.
Through hands-on involvement in a research plot on the Hudson Valley Farm Hub (HVFH), students will acquire practical skills and knowledge, enhancing their employability in the crop farming industry. Every summer, starting in 2024, six students will work on this project as paid student interns funded by this grant.
By partnering with Hudson Valley Farm Hub (HVFH), this project will create a robust platform for collaboration and data-driven insights.
Nature of the Work...
- Schedule will be (need based) from May 26 to August 15
- Mostly out in the field (water sampling, planting, lysimeter installation)
- Lab based (soil testing with a kit, heavy metals)
- Measuring photosynthesis in the field
- Data analysis (Excel based)
- Data interpretation
- Approx. 8 hours per week
- Present findings via PowerPoint
