ようこそ!
Why study Japanese?
Whatever your interests—popular culture, literature, business, technology, cuisine, philosophy, politics, music, architecture, religion or just about any other field—chances are you have come into contact with Japanese culture. Whether you want to build towards a career in Asia, travel, or just read your favorite manga in the original Japanese, now is your chance.
At SUNY New Paltz, take Japanese language lessons that will get you to the Intermediate Level. Improve your level outside of class and make friends at the weekly Japanese Conversation Table or as a member of the East-West Living & Learning Community (EWLLC). In the EWLLC, students of Chinese and Japanese live in a dorm setting with native speakers of those languages.
Regularly-offered Japan-themed courses in English in the LLC Department include “Japanese Fiction” and “Japanese Aesthetics & Culture.” In addition, New Paltz has direct exchanges with three colleges in Japan: Meiji University (in Tokyo), Kanazawa University and Nagasaki University of Foreign Studies (and there are additional programs through other SUNY campuses). Take the opportunity to build a foundation in language and culture here and then immerse yourself in student life abroad!
Programs Japanese courses count toward the Asian Studies Program. Others: One intermediate-level section can be counted toward the Asian American Studies Minor, and the International Business major requires intermediate proficiency in any world language.
