HEERF I (CARES) Student Emergency Grant

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act passed by Congress and signed into law on March 27, 2020 provides for Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) grants to students for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the coronavirus. SUNY New Paltz has signed and returned to the Department of Education a CARES Act HEERF Certification and Agreement. The certification states that SUNY New Paltz intends to use no less than 50% of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.
The total amount of HEERF funds that will be available for Emergency Financial Aid Grants for SUNY New Paltz students is $3,268,704.
SUNY New Paltz has determined that approximately 5,350 students are currently eligible to apply for funding through the CARES Act.
Eligibility:
Matriculated students enrolled as of March 13, 2020 are eligible to apply. Students must also have established eligibility to receive Federal Title IV aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for either the 2019-20 or 2020-21 year. A 2020-21 FAFSA can be filed at studentaid.gov if no FAFSA is currently on file.
The CARES Act does not allow funding for international students, non-matriculated students or students who cannot establish eligibility for Federal Title IV funding. Students enrolled in programs that were exclusively online prior to March 13th are also ineligible for funding.
Allowable Expenses:
Allowable expenses include food, housing, course materials, technology, health care and dependent care and transportation. Funds are not available for tuition assistance. A loss of wages is not an eligible expense.
Award Determination:
Award range has been revised to $750 -$2,000, with higher awards possible in extenuating situations, based on a lower than expected response rate. All applicants who have established eligibility for Federal Title IV aid will be considered for funding, with larger grants being awarded to high need students as defined by having an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) in the Pell eligible range on the 2019-20 FAFSA. Applications processed after the priority application date may receive awards at the lower end of the range, depending on availability of funds.
Deadline /Process:
The deadline for priority consideration is June 25, 2020. Notification of awards will be sent to the student’s Hawkmail address. Grants will be disbursed to students by check mailed to the permanent residence address on file with the College. Address updates can be made by emailing recreg@newpaltz.edu from the Hawkmail account. Applications received after the initial deadline, as well as applications awaiting confirmation of Title IV eligibility will be considered as funding allows.
Repayment/Impact on Financial Aid:
Funds received under the CARES Act do not need to be repaid and will not reduce your financial aid.

As of Aug. 25, 2020, SUNY New Paltz distributed $3,146,500 in HEERF Emergency Grants under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.
A total of 1,983 SUNY New Paltz students have received funding under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act as of Aug. 25, 2020.
First Quarterly Report
As of Sept. 30, 2020, SUNY New Paltz distributed $3,146,500 in HEERF Emergency Grants under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.
A total of 1,983 SUNY New Paltz students have received funding under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act as of Sept. 30, 2020.
From Aug. 25 – Sept. 30, 2020, no additional HEERF funds were distributed.
Final Quarterly Report
Since Sept. 30, 2020, an additional $122,204 in HEERF Emergency Grants has been distributed to 91 students.
As of Dec. 31, 2020, SUNY New Paltz distributed $3,268,704 in HEERF Emergency Grants under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.
A total of 2,074 SUNY New Paltz students have received funding under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.
