SUNY New Paltz partnered with Chongqing University of Education (CQUE) in 2016 to meet the needs in China for bilingual preschool teachers. Working with the International College at CQUE, students are given a truly bicultural education by learning about teaching strategies in two very different settings.
Students in this program complete the first five semesters at CQUE getting foundational work in education. Ten of the courses taken during this time are taught by SUNY New Paltz faculty so students begin to learn about American teaching styles as well. Students who meet the academic and English proficiency requirements then begin their study at SUNY New Paltz in the spring semester of their junior year, ending with a semester of fieldwork in a preschool setting. Students also have the option of studying English at SUNY New Paltz for 5 weeks prior to their academic start to help meet the English proficiency requirements.
At the conclusion of their program, they earn two diplomas in Early Childhood studies allowing them to work for a year in the U.S. or go back to China to teach. Graduates have frequently gone onto master’s programs in the U.S. and Europe as well, demonstrating the value of this program.
