Health Insurance and Health Services

All international students are required to purchase the State University of New York Health Insurance Policy and will be automatically enrolled in our comprehensive student health insurance plan upon registration.

We do not accept applications for a waiver of the insurance requirement.
New Students Information:
1. Student Health Report: The following required health forms must be completed by all students prior to arrival on campus. Complete and upload on Medicat, the Student Health Services Patient Portal.

Meningococcal Disease Fact Sheet & Meningitis Vaccination Response Form (Required only if you have not completed the Meningitis vaccination series - must read the fact sheet and sign the form)
2. Immunization Record: Prior to arrival all students must comply with the Immunization Requirements established by the State of New York. Upload on Medicat, the Student Health Service Patient Portal.
3. Health Insurance: All international students are automatically enrolled in our comprehensive student health insurance plan upon course registration. The SUNY international student health insurance provider is UnitedHealthcare.

The United States system of medical care may be different from that of your home country. In the U.S., you must pay for medical services yourself. There is no national health insurance and you cannot afford to be without medical insurance. For this reason, the College requires all full-time students and dependents to purchase the SUNY student health insurance in order to provide you with adequate medical insurance.
Most insurance policies purchased abroad are not comparable to the SUNY New Paltz insurance policy and do not provide adequate medical coverage. The SUNY international student health insurance provider is UnitedHealthcare. Visit International Student Health Care for details of benefits coverage, such as COVID-19, pre-existing conditions, and it provides a comprehensive range of medical services including emergency care, diagnostic tests, and hospitalization.

Student Health & Counseling Center
Note that your Student Health Insurance plan is separate from medical and psychological services you can receive on campus. Both Student Health Service and the Psychological Counseling Center are located in the Student Health & Counseling Center (the round building located by the pond on Southside Loop Road). They provide non-emergency medical care, and mental health and crisis counseling to SUNY New Paltz students who have registered for class and paid the Health Fee. Your separate Student Health Insurance is needed to pay for expenses such as testing sent out, pharmacy prescriptions, or emergency room visits. Also, Student Health Service or the Psychological Counseling Center may provide you with a referral to specialists that accept the Student Health Insurance plan. For times when the Student Health & Counseling Center is closed, after-hours and weekend services are available. Health Forms and Immunization Record
Before coming to the U.S., all students must complete and upload several required health documents to the Student Health Service Patient Portal hosted by Medicat. Detailed information about these requirements can be found on the Student Health Services website, as well as their Forms and Enrollment Requirements pages. These health documents must be on file with Student Health Services before the start of the academic term. Failure to comply will have consequences that may impact your enrollment. Note that Student Health Service records are confidential and information from a student's chart will not be released without proper authorization. Dependent/Family Health Care
F-2 dependents must enroll in the State University of New York health insurance through UnitedHealthcare. The SUNY health insurance coverage is required of all dependents while they are in the U.S.
To enroll your F-2 dependent in the UnitedHealthcare insurance plan, you will need to request the "dependent" insurance directly from the provider by completing the UHC Dependent Enrollment Form and mailing it to them with the payment.
