Marilyn Marin Benavides (Graduated 2022)
Graduate Student at the School of Social Work, Columbia University
My name is Marilyn Marin Benavides, a graduate of class December 2022. I majored in Psychology and Latin American & Caribbean Studies with a minor in Spanish. Currently, I am pursuing my Masters in Social Work at Columbia University.
I had a very enriching academic and cultural experience participating in the LACLAS program. The program provided me with courses in various interdisciplinary studies. I took classes in departments such as literature, theater, history, and Spanish. In addition to the courses, the professors’ diverse professional backgrounds and interests, exposed me to opportunities to volunteer and connect with various organizations, activists, artists, and scholars. As a major student, I completed a capstone research project
I am grateful to have participated in the LACLAS program, I think in many ways has helped become a critical learner and writer. Additionally, it has helped me approach social work holistically and to value the importance of knowing communities’ histories, cultures, and traditions.
