Six decades and counting

Charles Dumas (Political Science) was honored on November 17, 2024 with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Centre Film Festival. Charles is an actor, writer, and director with over 400 shows to his name. He is a Professor Emeritus from Penn State University’s School of Theatre, notable for being the first African American to achieve tenure in the Penn State department and for directing Raisin in the Sun as the first African American play on the PSU mainstage.

Terilee Edwards-Hewitt (Psychology) published a new academic article titled "The Contrabands and Freedmen Cemetery Memorial of Alexandria, Virginia: A remembered, forgotten, and re-remembered memory site; Journal of American Culture September 2024." This summer she was selected as one of twenty participants for the 2024 NEH (National Endowment for the Humanities) Summer Institute Towards a Peoples History of Landscape: Black and Indigenous History; in Richmond, Virginia. Terilee teaches anthropology at Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland, and at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. 

Leah Alper '23g (Adolescence Ed: Chemistry) was chosen by the Knowles Teacher Initiative as a member of its 2024 Cohort of Teaching Fellows. Thirty-one promising mathematics and science teachers who are just beginning their careers were awarded Knowles Teaching Fellowships. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and Sociology from Bowdoin College in 2017, and MAT in Chemistry from SUNY New Paltz in 2023, and is currently working towards an MSEd in Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages from SUNY Brockport.
