This beautiful articulated doll of a Courtier was made in the 19th century for Hinamatsuri, also called Doll's Day or Girls' Day, a special day in Japan still celebrated each year on March 3. Many Japanese families own dolls that have been handed down through many generations. On Hinamatsuri, the dolls are taken out of storage and displayed on a platform. During the celebration, their owners also pray for the health and happiness of young girls. The Dorsky’s doll portrays an elegant Courtier dressed in a silk kimono and trousers. His head, arms, and legs are made of wood. His face is delicately painted and he has a shock of white silk hair.
