COMMEMORATIVE FIGURE
While much of Benin brass sculpture was reserved for representations of the king, or oba, and village chiefs, the brasscasters also made smaller, less ambitious, sculptures of priests or attendants. These figures are intended to accompany images of the oba or chiefs set up on ceremonial altars in the house of the chief, or even in the palace of the oba. The large basin carried by this figure ndicates that it is a representation of an attendant.
