What does “Creative Writing” Mean to You?
The workshop model challenges writers of all experience levels and styles to be courageous, take risks and get honest feedback from peers and mentors. Options in poetry and prose allow students to concentrate on the mode of expression that feels most natural, or experiment with something new.
Emphasis on Publication
Our faculty are novelists, poets and creative non-fiction authors with extensive experience and relationships with the publishing industry. They strive not only to help students craft great poetry and prose, but also to give them the skills they need to pursue rewarding careers as writers and editors. Affordable and Flexible This 30-credit program is the only public, graduate creative writing option in the Hudson Valley. Complete it in two years or less, or design a part-time course load to fit into a busy schedule. We can also accommodate future teachers with creative writing electives that fulfill MAT degree requirements.
Writers as Teachers
Many writers seek to share their passion for in the classroom, and our program offers special training through a unique “Teaching Creative Writing” course taken by students in the program. New Paltz also offers MA students the chance to work as Teaching Assistants and gain valuable experience in the classroom. These Teaching Assistantships provide a tuition waiver and stipend for successful applicants.
Hone your Craft through Literary Study
One of the defining features of our program is the opportunity to work with the award-winning faculty in our graduate literature seminars. In addition to workshops, students take elective courses in our literature curriculum where they study texts ranging from ancient epics to contemporary graphic novels. Students also have the opportunity to attend lectures and readings, present at our annual Graduate Symposium, and take part in the great literary and artistic cultures of New Paltz.
