Donovan L. Howard is a retired insurance professional with more than 40 years’ experience in the insurance industry. He has held positions including Premium Auditor, Underwriter, Accountant, Account Manager and Legal Collections Manager. The vast majority of his time in the industry was as a premium auditor.
Howard earned his Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts & Sciences, majoring in finance, from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He began his career right out of college in Chicago, Illinois, with the Insurance Company of North America (INA) in their Premium Auditor training program. He later landed a position with American International Group (AIG), where he spent the last 25 years of his career in the insurance industry. Howard began at AIG as a Premium Auditor and over the years received several promotions, ultimately serving as Senior Premium Auditor/Account Specialist handling many of AIG’s Fortune 500 clients. Howard retired in May 2014 and finished his career with AIG as a manager in their Legal Collections Department.
In July 2015, Howard came out of retirement and spent three years in academia as an Assistant Dean at University at Albany, where he worked with faculty and staff to help establish the new College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security & Cybersecurity.
Howard has served on several boards including Community Foundation of the Greater Capital Region in Albany, New York, Brookwoods Condominium Association and The Iona College Council on the Arts. He enjoys spending downtime traveling, gardening, shopping, eating good food and listening to great music.
Howard is married to SUNY New Paltz President Darrell P. Wheeler.
