Dr. Devon C. Duhaney is an associate professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning and acting associate dean at the School of Education. Since beginning his career at SUNY New Paltz in the fall of 2000, his record has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to students and teaching and a willingness to take on roles and responsibilities at the departmental, school, and campus levels and to the field. He chaired the Department of Secondary Education for seven years. He also coordinated Second Language Education, Science Education, Social Studies Education, Mathematics Education, World Language Education (formerly Foreign Language Education), Educational Administration, and Early Childhood/Childhood Education programs.
Dr. Duhaney developed an early interest in the impact of media and technology on teaching and learning. His research focuses on integrating technology in teacher preparation, technology and student engagement in learning, and distance/online/blended learning. He has published multiple peer-reviewed articles and has presented his research at national and international professional conferences, further sharpening his mastery in the classroom. He has helped prepare practicing and pre-service teachers to integrate media and technologies in instruction to engage students in learning and improve students’ performance. He has taught courses in curriculum, assessment, and research.
Dr. Duhaney has received and directed over a million dollars in grants. Since 2002, he has been the principal investigator for a Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) grant that enhances the science, technology, and mathematics skills of under-represented and lower-income students from area middle and high schools. He was also the principal and co-principal investigator for an in-service program that prepares teachers to teach English as a new language.
Dr. Duhaney has contributed significantly to the life and work of SUNY New Paltz by serving on several committees. He has served on the Curriculum Committee, Central Committee on Educational Technology, Academic Affairs, Faculty Senate, and Reappointment, Tenure, and Promotion. He co-chaired the Faculty Senate’s ad hoc Open Access Scholarship and Repository Committee that developed the campus’s policy for open access scholarship/creative works and repository. He also served on the Advisory Boards of the Faculty Development Center and the Latin American and Caribbean Studies program. He co-coordinated the Classroom Technology Institute, renamed Center for Innovation in Education, which provided professional development courses for pre-and in-service teachers. He was a member of the Steering Committee for Assessment Planning and the Applied Learning Task Force.
Dr. Duhaney has demonstrated an extraordinary record of dedication to student success. He is approachable and willing to provide guidance and support, both academically and personally. His mentorship extends beyond his courses, as he encourages students to pursue opportunities to further their academic and career goals. He serves on the Regional Advisory Council of Today’s Students, Tomorrow’s Teachers (TSTT), which recruits and prepares a diverse teaching workforce for our classrooms starting in high school. A mentor to SUNY New Paltz TSTT students, he was honored for his contributions at TSTT’s 2024 Annual Recognition Brunch in May.
On the broader community, Dr. Duhaney has served on the Corporate Bylaws Committee of the Association of Teacher Educators, the Professional Development Committees of Wappingers Falls and Poughkeepsie City School Districts, the Workforce Education and Development Advisory Committee of the University of Technology in Jamaica, and as a Board member of the Ulster County School-to-Work Partnership.
Before he arrived at SUNY New Paltz, Dr. Duhaney was an Instructional Design Specialist with the University of Maine System, where he worked with faculty at the Fort Kent, Orono, Machias, and Presque Isle campuses on the planning, designing, and teaching of courses within the distance education setting. He was an Assistant Programs Director and Senior Producer in radio in Jamaica. He co-presented and co-produced SUNY New Paltz’s former television program, On Campus at SUNY New Paltz.
