Dr. Nancy Campos is the Director of the AMP & CSTEP Community (AC^2) Program in the School of Science & Engineering at SUNY New Paltz. She has worked with students pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) careers for over 14 years. She earned several degrees from the University at Buffalo, including a Ph.D. in Educational Culture, Policy, and Society, a master’s in education in General Education with a concentration in Childhood Education, a Professional Certificate in Teaching and Leading for Diversity, and a bachelor’s in art history.
Dr. Campos began as Director of AC^2 in 2017. Since her arrival, she has worked to grow the program by creating lasting partnerships across SUNY New Paltz and beyond to provide students with the academic and career guidance and support they deserve. Under her direction, the program has seen an increase in grant and donor funding, which allowed for an expansion of many components of the program, including an increase in tutoring offered for introductory STEM courses, an increase in financial support offered to students for STEM textbooks and other course-related materials, and an increase in the number of students and faculty who participate in the AC^2 Summer Research Program. The program has grown to serve over 125 students each year and continues to see alumni participation increase over the years.
Dr. Campos serves on several on-campus, regional, and statewide committees and organizations focusing on higher education and STEM education. She holds leadership positions in the HHMI Inclusive Excellence 3 program at SUNY New Paltz, the Association for Professional Administrators of CSTEP and STEP (APACS), and the SUNY Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP). She is also involved in various outreach opportunities for kids in the Poughkeepsie City School District, including serving as a troop leader for the first Girl Scout troop in the City of Poughkeepsie for over a decade.
Her favorite role, however, is being part of an amazing family and being Cecilia's mom.
“It means a lot to receive this award. Ever since I arrived at SUNY New Paltz, I made it a goal to find ways to engage our AC^2 alumni better; it was missing from our program. As a member of my alma mater's Young Alumni Network, I knew the value of getting young alumni engaged early and decided to focus on that. It has paid off very quickly in ways that I never imagined. I am so proud of the joint work the AC^2 Program and the Office of Alumni Relations has done in the past few years. It's great to see our alumni coming back and engaging in various unique ways that also mean a lot to them. It's also incredibly valuable to my current students and completes the circle of what AC^2 is all about.”
