The Science of Reading Fundamentals microcredentialis available to anyone at a cost of just $50, thanks to the tremendous interest and thousands of enrollments to date.
The scholarship is automatically applied at the time of application submission. When you submit your application, you will pay only $50 to complete the registration process.
Although the program is open to anyone, the application will ask New York State teachers to attest that they hold active certification credentials. This helps expedite the process of providing the materials teachers need to receive their New York State Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) credits.
Communicate with your employer to see if reimbursement is possible. You will sign up for the microcredential and pay the course fee. Upon payment, you will have a paid invoice to submit to your employer for reimbursement.
If you have 10 or more teachers, administrators, and/or others in your building, district, or organization who are interested in doing the Science of Reading Fundamentals microcredential as a group, New Paltz can arrange a Special Cohort.
As with our regular cohorts, Special Cohorts can start on the first of a month and run for a period of 6 months. Unlike our regular cohorts, Special Cohorts can be limited to your own team members, allowing you to work together to use the microcredential as needed for your team (e.g., to inform faculty development, training, and/or curricular planning). Special rates may apply based on cohort size.

Yes! This program is open to all and is a valuable complement to any students, scholars or professionals working in education, literacy, childhood development or related fields.
Additionally, we are also now able to offer this microcredentialfree of chargeto all School of Education graduate students and School of Education faculty and staff. This reduction in cost will be applied automatically when you register for the microcredential, so no payment will be necessary.
No change can be accommodated after registration, and no refunds will be provided after your microcredential start date. Prior to the course start date, if you are unable to commit, to attend please sorfmicrocredentials@newpaltz.edu.
Individuals who want to take the Science of Reading Fundamentals a second time are welcome to register again. However, we cannot award the program scholarship to enrollees taking it a second time.
Content and Delivery
The Science of Reading Fundamentals microcredential takes 35 hours to complete. It is designed to be completed in as little as 7 weeks (5 hours/week), but enrollees will have access to the course for 6 months if they wish to work through it more gradually.
Yes, this program is fully online and asynchronous, meaning the modules can be completed at any time – there are no synchronous, real-time meetings or assignments required. The microcredential is delivered in the D2L Brightspace learning environment. For information about technical requirements, please see BrightSpace System Requirements.
Completing the Microcredential
This is a non-credit microcredential. Therefore, no college credits are awarded.
Course completers with 80% or more on module quizzes will receive a satisfactory (S) grade noted on the New Paltz transcript and be eligible for the microcredential and be eligible for New York State CTLE credits.
Course completers who have not met the threshold of 80% on the module quizzes will receive no grade (NG) noted on the New Paltz transcript. If the course was otherwise completed they will still be eligible for New York State CTLE credits
Registered individuals that do not start or complete the course will receive no grade (NG) on the New Paltz transcript.
To receive the microcredential, students must achieve 80% or better on each of the module quizzes.
Once you have completed all required items in the course and attempted all five module quizzes you will be eligible to claim your 35 CTLE hours. You will navigate to the Awards tab in the Brightspace platform from which you can download and complete your CTLE form. This form should be completed and submitted to the State Education Department, which will apply the CTLE credit hours to your teacher certification.
The microcredential must be completed in the allocated period, generally 6 months for most cohorts. Students who do not start or complete the sequence within the allocated period will receive a no grade indicator NG.

Yes. When you register for the microcredential, you will have two login credentials issued:
For the SUNY New Paltz Status Portal, which is used to access the application portal and make your payment for the microcredential. Typically, this portal will use your personal email address.
For the D2LBrightspace learning platform, which you will use to access the microcredential modules and begin completing the course. This login will require a SUNY New Paltz email address that will be provided to you when you register.
If you forget your password, or find that it will not be accepted despite repeated attempts, you may request a password reset by using this Self-Service Reset Link. You will receive an email to the personal email address on file for you.

Because SUNY New Paltz uses Microsoft Office as our login system, microcredential enrollees who work in districts or organizations that also use Microsoft Office may have trouble switching between accounts. This is especially common if you are using a work computer to access our microcredential.
If you are having this issue, try logging in from a different browser (I.e. if you regularly login to your work email through Google Chrome, try logging into Brightspace using Firefox) or, if available, using a different computer to log in.
