Dr. Brenda Boatswain (pronounced “Bo-Sun”) is the Montefiore Medical Center’s Wellbeing Manager and Assistant Professor in Department of Family and Social Medicine, Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Boatswain provides behavioral health education and consultations to address stress and burnout and their sequelae among physicians, nurses, other clinicians, and non-clinicians at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx and Westchester counties. Dr. Boatswain’s services and programs transform how staff think about stress and burnout and help them more effectively support their own wellbeing and by extension the wellbeing of their patients, teams and organization. She also participates on the Montefiore Graduate Medical Education Subcommittee for House Staff Wellbeing, Diversity Council for Department of Medicine, HR DEI Ambassador Committee, and the Staff Emotional Support Committee. Dr. Boatswain’s passion is to bring psychology to groups; helping others understand and utilize their neurobiology for optimal self and team wellbeing.
Dr. Boatswain is a Licensed Psychologist, Certified by the International Board for Certification of Group Psychotherapists, Credentialed Health Service Psychologist, and Society for Human Resource-Certified Professional. Dr. Boatswain graduated with a B.A. in Psychology from Barnard College, Columbia University, a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from the College at New Paltz and earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University at Albany.
Dr. Boatswain is an invited national speaker, published author and educator with experience across the lifespan. In an effort to bring psychological science to communities, Dr. Boatswain has written on behavioral health topics for local newspapers such as the Scarsdale Inquirer in Westchester County, NY and Norwood News in the Bronx, NY.
She is Co-Chair of the American Group Psychotherapy Association annual conference. She is the founder and owner of a premier behavioral health company that provides evidence based behavioral health and wellness consultation, counseling, and prevention education. She is also the founder and facilitator of the Westchester Mental Health Peer Group, a peer consultation group for mental health clinicians of color in Westchester County. Dr. Boatswain founded the WMHPG to fill the need for a professional organization for highly skilled clinicians of color in Westchester County, NY, and surrounding areas. As part of their mission the WMHPG provides mental health education to community organizations across the age span.
Her civic interests include serving on the Dean’s Leadership Council for the University at Albany’s School of Education, Caribbean Medical Mission, and board member of the former New York Service and Justice Collaborative. Among her charitable organizations are the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the American Foundation for the University of the West Indies, and her Alma Maters. She is a spouse and parent of 3 wonderful children. She has over 25 years of experience as a trusted professional in behavioral health and wellness.
