Rainwater that falls on the roof of Shawangunk Hall flows into a 1,000 gallon rainwater cistern located
underground at the northwest corner of the building. Rainwater from this cistern is used to
irrigate trees and shrubs that are just beginning to be established and during very dry periods,
reducing the total amount of potable water used by the campus. In general, the campus selects
native plant varieties that thrive in our climate, so regular irrigation is not necessary.
