In-person music concerts return with “A Season of Renewal”
After a lengthy hiatus from the stage, the Department of Music revived its in-person music concerts in fall 2021 with “A Season of Renewal.”
“As we are emerging from what we hope is the end of a devastating pandemic that essentially shut down live performing arts, ‘A Season of Renewal’ reflects a new beginning, or a resurgence, of live music,” Associate Professor Kent Smith said in a statement announcing the series. “We're also thrilled to present a more diverse, inclusive series that incorporates music making from different parts of the world, cutting edge compositions, as well as traditional offerings. We know there will be something for everyone!”
For the first time, the Concert Series was free to all New Paltz students. The semester’s offerings included Concert Series traditions like the Symphonic Band and College Youth Symphony, Chamber Jazz concerts, the Faculty Showcase, and other faculty and student performances. Some standout performances included “Gamelan Music from Indonesia and America” on Nov. 23; an evening of original compositions on Nov. 2; and “Selections from Handel’s Messiah” on Dec. 7.
"Selections from Handel's Messiah," which was live-streamed on the Listen Forward YouTube channel, can be viewed above.
