January 2022: Initiatives/News: DEI goals

School-based D&I Working Groups share goals for 2021-22

SUNY New Paltz President Donald P. Christian asked each school-based Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) working groups to prepare a brief synopsis of initial work undertaken in spring 2021, as well as three-to-five goals, objectives and priorities identified for the 2021-2022 academic year. The goals that were submitted for this this academic year are:

F&PA Council—For this year, our priority is continued discussions about the best ways F&PA Council can help support departmental and schoolwide DEI initiatives. That might include inviting experts for faculty training and support. We are discussing the possibility of inviting an expert to campus on public monuments, but this will require funding and further discussions.

Dorsky Museum—Continuing to build partnerships with Kingston community and campus community on planning the Ben Wigfall and Communications Village exhibition opening September 2022 and related exhibition programs.

Art—The Art Department's goal for this year is to consider our admission process and the portfolio requirement. We have a faculty meeting scheduled for Nov. 3 to discuss implications of eliminating the portfolio review for incoming, non-transfer students. Our Admissions, Curriculum, and Ad Hoc DEI committees will take up this focus this year and work together on the attendant issues involved.

Art History— The department will co-sponsor a “Careers in Art History” panel for students with the Art History Association. For this event, we would like to invite a diverse group of art history alumni.

Music—Connecting with Music alumni to better understand their experiences in our program generally as well as specifically related to DEIB issues.

Theatre Arts—Continue to prioritize under-represented and traditionally marginalized voices in our production season for 2021-22.
