January 2022: Initiatives/News: Sustainability Faculty Fellows

Sustainability Faculty Fellows welcome new F&PA members, unveil new initiative

The Sustainability Faculty Fellows program in conjunction with the Office of Campus Sustainability and Academic Affairs would like to recognize the Fine & Performing Arts Faculty and Graduate Students participating in the Fellows 6th cohort: Lital Dotan (Sculpture), Andrea Kantrowitz (Art and Art Education), Kelly McGrath (Art), Jill Parisi-Phillips (Printmaking), Emilie Houssart (Art), Christiana Fortune-Reader (Music).

Every year up to 15 academic faculty, professional faculty and graduate students are selected to participate in the Sustainability Faculty Fellows program. Over 20 faculty, staff and graduate students from across F&PA have been accepted into the program and continue to work on dynamic and innovative programming and curriculum in sustainability education, action and awareness.

The Sustainability Faculty Learning Community—a project of the Sustainability Committee—is a multidisciplinary faculty network that encourages innovation in sustainability education and provides a framework for members of our campus community to engage in developing projects, programming and curriculum development centered on sustainability. Incoming Fellows engage in a year-long exploration of the different dimensions of sustainability (Planet, People, Prosperity) and the scholarship and practice of teaching, collaboration, and community building. This program is funded by the Office of the Provost, the Office of Campus Sustainability, the Sustainability Committee, and the Faculty Development Center.

Current members of the Sustainability Faculty Fellows from F&PA include Joshua Kroenblat (Graphic Design), Emily Puthoff (Sculpture), Matthew Friday (Art), Beth Wilson (Art History), Elena Sniezek (Sculpture), Michael Asbill (Sculpture), Anne Galperin (Art), Kerry Dean Carso (Art History), Maggie Oakes (Printmaking), Andrea Varga (Theatre Arts), Anat Shiftan (Ceramics), Beth Thomas (Art Education), Suzanne Stokes (Art), and Andrea Frank (Photography).

Applications are open at the start of the academic year. Fellows receive a small stipend, participate in three educational sessions during fall semester and a two-day sustainability institute in January. There are additional workshops, seminars and conferences available to fellows throughout the year. More information is available on the campus sustainability website.

New this year is a sustainability designation/attribute that will be applied to courses designed or modified by faculty fellows to incorporate and/or focus on sustainability within a discipline. This will enable students and academic advisors to identify sustainability courses for students interested in an interdisciplinary sustainability component of their education at New Paltz.  If you have a course you would like to submit for inclusion in the designation, please see the sustainability website or contact the Sustainability Committee. Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis.
