Nyasia Pettway Rochelle was accepted into the SUNY New Paltz Photography BFA program on her 19th birthday, and she couldn’t be happier about it. We caught up with the Brooklyn native in the midst of fall ’21 finals to learn a little more about her and see some of her work.

How did you discover photography?
I got into photography during middle school, when I got my first iPhone. I’d eventually just start taking pictures of my friends, wherever we went, and sunsets. Then, for my 15th birthday, my mom gifted me my first camera and I never looked back.
Why did you choose the photography BFA program at New Paltz?
I loved how close knit everyone was. I’m a big people person, who loves engaging in conversation and hearing the many stories that people have to tell. Photography is just another outlet to that, and I want to be around people who understand, and appreciate that as much as I do.
What are you most excited about?
I’m most excited to see my degree change from visual arts to photography, to be honest. It’ll feel set in stone for me, and evidently remind me that I have the potential to fulfill this dream for myself and my family.
