The return of Design Week
Design Week 2022 took place March 28-April 1 and featured two keynote presentations, 12 workshops, a film screening, and Slide Slam. The Department of Art was thrilled to bring the event back to an in-person format, and this year's Design Week was one of the busiest yet. Artists For Ukraine sale raises over $4,000
"With ponderous hearts, we recognize that the humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Ukraine is the only latest crisis in a long and horrible legacy of such atrocities," said Associate Professor of Sculpture Emily Puthoff. "We are currently reflecting on the lessons we learned from this fundraiser and thinking about how we might refine and apply the model we built here to lend our creative minds and skills to help others suffering."

Recent Art History grads return to campus for careers panel
Recent graduates Nirvana Santos-Kuilan'15, Miquael Williams '16, and Jacquelyn Woods '18 participated in a dinner and panel on "Careers in Art History" for Art History students on May 5. Mya Bailey, an art history major and treasurer of the Art History Association, moderated the event.

The event was supported by Campus Auxiliary Services and co-sponsored by the Department of Art History and the Art History Association.
First-year drawing students hold portrait workshop with elderly community members
Students from Associate Professor Itty S. Neuhaus' drawing class were paired with elderly residents at the Woodland Pond retirement community in New Paltz for a "You Talk, I Draw" portrait workshop on May 4. Each student posed a question, and the residents responded with their stories while the students drew them.
The goal of this project is for art students to develop the empathy that comes from getting acquainted with their subjects and the facility to capture a subject in conversation. In this way, students will make portraits, to the best of their abilities, that capture the essence of a person.
Neuhaus' first version of "You Talk, I Draw" took place in November 2019; she and her students have not been able to return until now. This was inspired by a project Jean-Marc Superville-Sovak did at visiting Dorsky Museum curator Karlyn Benson's gallery.
Participating students included Benjamin Bryant, Emma Conroy, Mason Droge, Michelle Edwards, Ike Lobel, Kevin Ocampo, Juliette Rhodes, Sophia Stanton, and Bridget Vasquez.
