Moderators of the SUNY New Paltz Undergraduate Art History Symposium

Art History hosts 6th Annual SUNY New Paltz Undergraduate Art History Symposium

Students of the Department of Art History hosted the sixth annual SUNY New Paltz Undergraduate Art History Symposium in April 2024, a virtual conference that has grown into the largest event of its kind in the world. This year, more than 150 students participated by sharing presentations on their various areas of art history research—including our own New Paltz students Amy Avolio, Jazmyne Daily-Simpson, John Saglibene, and Ella Westöö.

"We are grateful to the over 150 student-scholars attending colleges and universities across the world for their willingness to share their work with a much broader audience and the effort they made to put together such impressive presentations," wrote Associate Professor Keely Heuer, chair of the Department of Art History. "The level of your scholarship is truly impressive and demonstrates to me how bright the future is for the field of Art History, in all its aspects."

This year's symposium was moderated by 10 art history students, including members of the executive board of the College’s Art History Association (AHA). Congratulations to Jocelyn Thornton, Ben Kuhn, Anna DiPiazza, Sara Kronfeld, Liv MartinezElla Rose Zombek, Nicolette DiLapi, art history minor Bridget Hermann, Em Himes, and Jeffery Wendover.

Christopher Daly ’12

Christopher Daly ’12 was honored as one of 2024's 40 Under Forty list by the Office of Alumni Relations. Daly is currently the 2021-24 David E. Finley Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. After graduating from New Paltz in 2012 with a BA in art history, he completed an MA in art history at Ohio University (2015) and a PhD in art history at Johns Hopkins University (2023).

As an art historian, Daly specializes in Italian Renaissance painting, primarily the artists and workshops of late 15th-century Tuscany. His research has been supported by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Walters Art Museum, and the National Gallery of Art, and has appeared in several international journals. Daly also recently received a post-doctoral fellowship from the Metropolitan Museum of Art for 2024-25.

"Chris is a wonderful person as well as a gifted and dedicated scholar with a unique talent that has been recognized through his having been awarded highly competitive fellowships and his publication record, remarkable for someone at this early stage in their career and a manifestation of the respect he has earned of his colleagues," wrote Professor Reva Wolf in her nomination of Daly to the 40 Under Forty list. "His career up to now provides a vivid example of how the opportunities of a public university can make a positive difference in a student’s future."
