Duties: The Office of Academic Advising at the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz welcomes applications for a full-time Academic Advisor to provide students with one-on-one and group academic advising in a manner that is consistent with the University’s goals for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Through effective academic advising, the Academic Advisor fosters students’ sense of belonging, academic achievement, and timely degree completion through personalized educational planning and ongoing support from entry to graduation.

Duties for this role include but are not limited to:
• Provide undergraduate students with integrative advisement and informed guidance with educational planning in a manner that is consistent with NACADA’s Core Values of Academic Advising
• Support the College’s vision for the effective coordination of an integrated set of data-informed academic advising and transition services that support student learning, persistence, and on-time degree completion
• Proficiency with advising technology (EAB’s Starfish Student Success Platform) to facilitate the delivery of proactive and integrated student advisement in a manner that promotes a seamless and communicative campus-wide culture of student success
• Maintain a current understanding of all college academic policies and procedures which could inform student academic progress and time-to-degree
• Actively manage a large student caseload (average primary caseload: ~200 students, with secondary support of ~450 students), which involves a high level of proactive outreach to first-year students, first-semester transfer students, and students who may be in academic jeopardy
• Foster collaborative working relationships with faculty, staff and students in support of student success initiatives for all undergraduate students and, in particular, student groups with unique barriers to success including first generation college students, transfer students, diverse learners, and students from underrepresented populations
• Potentially serve as an advising liaison to a specific department or school to enhance the complementary advising relationship between the Office of Academic Advising and the academic departments
• Refer students, as appropriate, to the many resources and offices available to them on campus to support their individual needs and to enhance their educational experience while promoting their development, persistence toward degree, and general well-being
• An active commitment to supporting an inclusive and welcoming learning environment for a diverse undergraduate population, with a focus on supporting racially-minoritized groups
• Support a culture of assessment by contributing to the tracking, collection, reporting and analysis of services for continuous improvement
• Stay apprised of evidence-based practices and other developments in the field of academic advising and student success

Qualifications: Required:
• Bachelor’s degree AND one (1) year or more previous experience in one or more of the following: advising; student recruitment/retention; youth development; student development; program retention; graduation and academic planning; or a related area
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite programs
• Ability to positively interact with a diverse set of families, staff, and instructors
• An understanding of the variety of challenges facing college students today

Preferred:
• Master’s degree, preferably in higher education, education, counseling, or a relevant field
• Experience with student support services, youth development or similar social service programs
• Experience with student advising experience at a comparable institution of higher education
• A continuing commitment to advance equity, inclusion, and social justice practices that support the needs of underrepresented/racially minoritized student populations
• Working understanding and sensitivity to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
• Experience with caseload management
• Knowledge of student information systems such as Banner, DegreeWorks, and a familiarity with advising technology such as EAB’s Starfish
• Fluency in a language other than English
