Duties: Administrative Computing, part of IT/Computer Services at the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz, invites applications for the position of Web Programmer. This is a full-time position focusing on creating and supporting custom web applications. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in traditional server-side web programming and the ability to implement consistent, simple user experiences using HTML and CSS.
This role is part of the Administrative Computing department, whose mission is to support the administrative offices of the campus who provide services for our faculty, staff and students. This role will primarily work with others in Administrative Computing and other departments in IT Services. Depending on the project, they may also work directly with administrative offices during requirements gathering, testing, or troubleshooting. Due to the public nature of some web applications, this role may also work with the Office of Instructional Technology and the Office of Communication and Marketing.
Responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:
• Design, code, and support custom web applications
• Implement new features in our my.newpaltz portal
• Develop integrations with third party software via Webhooks and APIs
• Stay up-to-date on vendor API changes and modify integrations as needed
• Document processes and procedures
Qualifications: Required:
• Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience or five years’ experience in lieu of degree
• Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as PHP (strongly preferred), Python Java, C#, JavaScript, Ruby, etc.
• Proficiency in querying relational databases with SQL
• Experience using an MVC framework (Laravel strongly preferred)
• Understanding of web request-response cycle and state management, including HTTP verbs, error codes, headers, sessions, cookies and caching
• Experience with Git
• Excellent problem solving skills
Preferred:
• Experience working in a higher education environment
• Experience working with Ellucian Banner
• Experience with Oracle PL/SQL
• Experience consuming RESTful web services
• Familiarity with Linux
