Duties: The Center for Student Engagement within the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz is seeking an innovative, creative, and engaged colleague to join our team as the next Assistant Director for Intercultural Student Engagement. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives by overseeing programs and services that support students from historically marginalized and underrepresented populations at SUNY New Paltz. This position will also have the unique opportunity to help shape a new multicultural space that focuses on leading efforts to promote cultural awareness, cultivating brave/safe spaces for meaningful dialogues, and developing educational opportunities that enhance belongingness as well as cross-cultural understanding. This position will also collaborate with campus partners, advise student organizations, supervise the Intercultural Student Ambassadors, and provide leadership in creating an environment that celebrates and honors diversity while promoting equity for all students. This is a 12-month, full time, position. The position is represented by United University Professionals (UUP) and features competitive NYS benefits.
Duties of the role include but are not limited to:
• Serve in Student Affairs as part of the Center for Student Engagement, which provides services including orientation and transition programs, leadership development and student activities, fraternity and sorority support, student union building operations, and community and civic engagement.
• Work collaboratively within and beyond this team to contribute to a vibrant student life program that engages students across campus.
• Oversee the daily operations of the Multicultural Resource Center, ensuring effective functioning and adherence to institutional policies.
• Supervise the Coordinator for LGBTQ+ Advocacy and Intersectional Programming.
• Supervise and advise Intercultural Student Engagement Ambassadors who are responsible for planning and executing events and workshops, actively engaging with students on campus, and marketing events hosted by the Multicultural Resource Center.
• In collaboration with the Coordinator for LGBTQ+ Advocacy and Intersectional Programming, develop and lead innovative trainings and other educational opportunities to various campus constituents to enhance belonging and coalition building within and between the many faith and spiritual traditions, LGBTQ+ students, multicultural students, and allies.
• With campus partners, create, implement, and assess a broad range of programs, events, activities, and sustained learning experiences that transform campus culture and promote cultural awareness as well as support underrepresented students.
• Provide consultation, guidance, and/or training for student leaders on DEIJAB trends and concerns. This population includes but is not limited to Resident Assistants, Orientation Leaders, Student Association executive board, Senators, student organization leaders, etc.
• Provide holistic and culturally responsive support, counseling, and advisement to individual students of various ethnic backgrounds as well as to cultural/ethnic interest student organizations.
• Work collaboratively with campus departments, faculty, and student organizations to advance diversity initiatives and create a supportive campus climate.
• Liaise and provide support to Black Solidarity Day and First World Graduation
• Collaborate with and among a network of programs across the institution designed to support students from diverse backgrounds, including the Scholars’ Mentorship Program (SMP), AMP & CSTEP Community (AC2), New Paltz Athletes of Color (NPAC), Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), and others.
• In collaboration with the University’s Chief Diversity Officer, oversee the management of diversity training for incoming students as part of their online orientation modules.
• Assist in the consultation, review, and approval of student club events.
• Assist in the management of the student engagement/student organizations and clubs platform, Anthology Engage.
• Position will require observing core operating hours and will also include nights and weekends in the form of rotational office coverage and assigned programming; flexibility of scheduled hours to support departmental programs and operations is expected
• Serve on the Student Affairs committees and working groups as well as other University services.
Qualifications: Required:
• Bachelor’s degree in related field and a minimum of three years of direct relevant experience
• Current and extensive knowledge in the field of diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, access, belonging, and cultural competency
• Demonstrated track record of working with underrepresented populations and implementing DEIJAB initiatives
• Thorough knowledge of and experience with federal and state laws, including but not limited to Title VI, Title IX, Title VII, ADEA, and ADA
• Experience in designing and delivering training, programming, and educational initiatives
• Strong organizational ability, interpersonal skills, strategic and analytical skills
• Ability to conceptualize, organize, and coordinate programs
• Ability to work within a dynamic environment and a proven competence in managing multiple tasks and competing priorities
Preferred:
• Master’s degree in related field with experience in student activities, student engagement, DEI, and/or student personnel
• Certification in Peer Education, Social Justice Education/ Racial Justice Institutes, Coalition Building Institute or similar
• Experience with conflict resolution and mediation methods
• Experience with Anthology Engage software platform
• Experience with developing intersectional communities on a college campus, including advising student organizations and working with student government.
