The blolo bla is the beautiful and sexual spirit wife, who is wedded to a Baule man before his birth in the spirit world (blolo) and who lives with him for his earthly lifetime. Her role is to bring good forture to him and his family, but also to act as a substitute wife and refuge from his imperfect earthly spouse. Placed in a private shrine, usually in the bedroom, the blolo bla is the object of very personal devotion by the man and is jealously guarded from the outside world.
