Basketry in Africa is a specialized craft practiced by women, who use different types of grasses colored with natural dyes. Most baskets are utilitarian, but this example probably was for display since the outside face is the important one. Decorated with cowrie shells, the symbol of abundance, this basket holds forth the promise of prosperity. The presence of leather trim may indicate that this basket came from pastoral peoples, such as the Fulani. Many baskets made by Fulani women were used as gifts or as items for trade.
