Online Degrees & Courses
Online courses deliver all the course content in an online format using some sort of learning management system. At SUNY New Paltz, our LMS is Blackboard. Some online courses do require proctored exams or other assessments, and those may include an additional cost to students. Online courses may be fully asynchronous (where there are no required synchronous elements) or they may be synchronous (where some or most sessions or activities require students to join the group in real time via web conferencing such as Skype, Zoom, or Blackboard Collaborate).
Online programs are programs where the entirety of the program is available in an online format. This enables students who are never able to come to campus to complete their program of study from any location in the world.
Hybrid courses combine elements of online and face-to-face learning environments. Taking advantage of the best of both environments, a hybrid course uses some online learning activities to reduce the number of hours spent in the seated classroom.
Hybrid programs are programs where courses are available in both online and face-to-face modalities and students are able to mix and match to select the right balance to meet their learning needs. So, while each individual course may be fully face-to-face, fully online, or even hybrid, students can take a mix of courses in the different formats. This allows a student flexibility to choose some online courses that do not require them to come to campus, and yet still choose some other courses where they can engage face-to-face with their instructor and peers.
