Chosen Name & Pronouns

Current students can opt to set a chosen name and/or pronoun in My.NewPaltz.edu

Student tab > Profile & Settings > Chosen First Name & Pronouns

Chosen Name

SUNY New Paltz recognizes that many students, faculty, and staff prefer to use first names other than their legal ones to identify themselves. As long as the use of this chosen first name is not for the purpose of misrepresentation, the college acknowledges that a “chosen first name” can and should be used where possible in the course of college business and education. All official college correspondence will use your legal name. Please note: the chosen first name is used solely for New Paltz’s internal systems. Official transcripts, enrollment verifications and third-party database systems will continue to use your legal name. Your chosen first name can be changed no more than once an academic year and twice during your tenure at New Paltz. Disclaimer: This policy does not form a contract of any kind and may be modified, changed, altered, or rescinded at the discretion of SUNY New Paltz. Inappropriate use of the chosen first name, including but not limited to misrepresentation or attempting to avoid a legal obligation, may be cause for denying the request.

The chosen name will appear in my.newpaltz.edu in the "you are logged in as" message. Faculty will see the chosen name when using the following faculty services:

  • Class rosters
  • Mid-term evaluations
  • Final grade submission
  • Advisee listing
  • Student transcript search page (not the transcript itself)
  • ID card
  • Name field in the college email address

Faculty and Staff opting to use a chosen name, should complete the Chosen Name Request Form and bring ID to Records & Registration in Wooster Hall,  room 115

Pronouns

SUNY New Paltz recognizes that displaying gender pronouns is important to students, faculty, and staff, in their communications with others and to present as authentically as possible. Pronouns can be displayed where relevant in the course of university business and education. Please note: pronoun display is used solely for New Paltz’s internal systems on an opt-in basis. Official transcripts, New Paltz official email, Brightspace, enrollment verifications, diplomas, third party database systems, and all external communications, such as hometown newspapers (dean’s list announcements), etc., will not display your pronouns. Your displayed pronouns can be changed no more than once an academic year and twice during your tenure at New Paltz. Disclaimer: This policy does not form a contract of any kind and may be modified, changed, altered, or rescinded at the discretion of SUNY New Paltz.

Pronouns will be listed on the following services:
