Shango/College Hall

 

Learn the history of the building's name

College Hall is a residence hall within the Parker complex. The Parker complex is composed of the traditional corridor style hallways with a single sex bathroom shared by all residents of the floor or house which is maintained by the Custodial Staff. Only male residents live on the first floor of of College Hall and only female residents live on the second floor of College Hall. Students who live in the corridor style buildings enjoy a lot of activities and interactions with the members of their house. Lounges can be found in the basement level.

College Hall, part of the first residence hall on campus, is known for its unique construction and traditions housing a diverse student population. Located in the basement of College Hall are a study lounge with a computer lounge and a kitchen with a lounge area. Located on the first and second floors are small laundry rooms equipped with washers and dryers and recycling area and microwave oven is located in the basement. Vending machines are also located on the first floor. College Hall offers a very close-knit community and it is near the academic buildings. The small, diverse population of the hall offers opportunity for growth and experiences through in-hall programming and development. College Hall is five minutes away from Main Street New Paltz and is the closest hall to the village.

Shango Hall, part of the first residence hall on campus, is known for its unique construction and traditions housing a diverse student population. Located in the basement of Shango Hall are a study lounge with a computer lounge, one T. V. lounges, and a kitchen. Located on the first and second floors are small laundry rooms equipped with washers and dryers, and recycling area and microwave oven is located in the kitchen. Vending machines are also located on the first floor. Shango offers a very close community and proximity to the academic buildings. The small, diverse population of the hall offers opportunity for growth and experiences through in-hall programming and development. College Hall (The Music Building) is  the academic section of Shango/College Hall, which is located between Shango and College Hall. This section of the building houses the offices, practice studios and clinics for the Music and Music Therapy programs. Located at the center of the first floor of the Music Building is the Max and Nadia Sheppard Recital Hall. Shango Hall is five minutes away from Main Street New Paltz and is the closest hall to the village.

Additionally, the Scholar's Mentorship Program (SMP), a networking program designed to enhance the academic careers and social experiences of general admission students of color during their undergraduate years, is housed in Shango near the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Educational Center.

History: Originally called, the College Union, College Hall first served as the social and cultural center of campus. The building consisted of numerous lounges and dining facilities. A music room, reading room, mail room, and snack bar all contributed toward leisure time activities. Today, the College Hall (Music Building) houses the Music, and Music Therapy departments, as well as the Honors Center.
