Founded in 2007, the SUNY New Paltz Solar Car Team is sponsored by the SUNY New Paltz Student Association (SA), School of Science and Engineering (SSE), and local industries and businesses. SUNY New Paltz is a small liberal arts college located 75 miles north of New York City with a diverse student population. The team benefits from this diversity and a broad range of majors. They are advised by electrical and computer engineering Professor Michael Otis and Technical Consultant Lee Cabe (a retired physics teacher who has more than 20 years of experience in building championship caliber solar powered vehicles). The students are responsible for securing funds, raising renewable energy awareness, and researching and developing solar-powered electric vehicles targeted for competition at the American Solar Challenge, Formula Sun Grand Prix, and World Solar Challenge races.
