January 2022: Faculty Accomplishments: Music

Phyllis Chen

The work of Assistant Professor Phyllis Chen was featured as part of a residency performance at the Target Margin Theater in Brooklyn, New York in November 2021. The International Contemporary Ensemble performed Chen’s “Tone Grove,” which, according to Broadway World, “translates Anni Albers' weaving patterns into custom-built drum sequences, creating sounds from hand-cranked music boxes, bamboo, rice, bowls, and hands.”

Katie Down

As part of the annual O+ Festival in Kingston, Assistant Professor Katie Down and a group of graduate music therapy students co-facilitated a community music experience at the Academy Green Park on Oct. 9, 2021. Down and the students offered a drum circle, a song share/sing-along, followed by a sound meditation.

O+ highlights artists and healing professionals and the need for affordable and accessible medical and healing care for artists. During the festival, participating artists and musicians, many of whom are uninsured or underinsured, receive health and wellness services in the O+ Artists’ Clinic.

Alex Peh

“Talking Gong,” the latest album of original compositions from Susie Ibarra featuring Associate Professor Alex Peh and Claire Chase, was named one of the top jazz records of January 2021 by the popular streaming app Bandcamp.
