Amy Waldman, a former New York Times journalist and author of the highly acclaimed novel The Submission, joined New Paltz for the Distinguished Speaker Series in November 2012. The Submission imagines the angry fallout when a jury chooses an anonymous design for a Sept. 11 memorial at ground zero, and the architect turns out to be Muslim American. The reaction from the jury members, the public, and the victims' families is both complex and emotional. Ms. Waldman's appearance in New Paltz offers a special opportunity for readers to hear from the author directly. A book signing and reception will follow the presentation.
The Submission has been chosen for this year's community read at SUNY New Paltz for the November One Book/One New Paltz event, Nov. 11 - 20. One Book is a reading project (one of many across the country) that annually selects a book for local residents to read as a basis for a shared experience of celebrating and promoting reading and community.
